From Conference Proceedings to Journal Publication: Advancing Research on Aviation Transformation in ASEAN

30 Apr 2026

Dr. Thai Binh Tran's research on “MRO Shared Services Trends in Southeast Asian Countries” has achieved an important academic milestone through publication in both an international conference proceeding and a peer-reviewed academic journal, demonstrating a systematic and cumulative approach to research development.

The study was first published in the Springer Proceedings Book under the Sustainable Aviation Series as part of ISATECH 2024, providing an initial platform to introduce emerging issues surrounding Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) shared services within Southeast Asia's rapidly evolving aviation sector.

Building upon the conference paper, the full research article was subsequently published in the International Journal of Aviation Science and Technology (IJAST) in January 2025. The journal publication expanded the analytical depth of the original study, offering a more comprehensive examination of the strategic, operational, and ecosystem-level implications of MRO shared services across the ASEAN region.

The research investigates how shared-service models are transforming aviation maintenance operations by enhancing efficiency, resource utilization, knowledge sharing, and regional collaboration. As airlines and aviation organizations face increasing pressure to improve competitiveness while managing costs, MRO shared services have emerged as a strategic mechanism to support operational resilience and long-term sustainability.

Rather than viewing publications as isolated outputs, the research reflects a broader commitment to developing a coherent and internationally positioned research stream. Within this approach, conference papers serve to introduce and refine emerging research questions, journal articles provide deeper theoretical and empirical analysis, while book chapters and collaborative projects contribute to expanding the overall research ecosystem.

The study forms part of Dr. Tran's wider research agenda on aviation transformation in ASEAN, focusing on how airlines, airports, MRO organizations, and industry stakeholders adapt to changing technological, economic, and institutional environments. This research stream explores the intersection of strategy, operations, and ecosystem development in one of the world's most dynamic aviation markets.

The progression from conference proceedings to journal publication highlights the importance of research continuity and knowledge accumulation in producing meaningful academic contributions. Each publication represents a step toward building a deeper understanding of the forces shaping the future of aviation in Southeast Asia.

As ASEAN aviation continues to undergo significant transformation, research on emerging business models such as MRO shared services provides valuable insights for industry practitioners, policymakers, and scholars seeking to support sustainable sector development and regional integration.
